Molluscum Contagiosum

According to the CDC, Molluscum Contagiosum is an infection caused by a poxvirus (molluscum contagiosum virus). The result of the infection is usually a benign, mild skin disease characterized by lesions (growths) that may appear anywhere on the body. Within 6-12 months, Molluscum contagiosum typically resolves (CDC , 2015).

Have your kids caught this??? Super annoying!! So far it’s graced us with its ugly presence on 2 of 3 of my kiddos (Can I put a super nasty eye roll here?!). It’s kind of a no-harm-no-foul deal except that it’s contagious….and annoying…and ugly.

No mama wants to see her precious baby riddled with “skin lesions” (OK, that’s a bit dramatic, it looks more like a butt-ton of tiny pimples, still totally gross!) I took my then 4 year old in to the ped when about 5 tiny, flesh colored bumps popped up on her booty cheek, 1 after the next. Ped said Molluscum Contagiosum and my mind literally went Ziggety Zaggety Ziggety Zoom! I mean really, who comes up with these names??? Flippin’ Harry Potter??

He, the ped not Harry Potter, advised us to use regular OTC wart treatments and that if those didn’t work we could always come back in to freeze them off (WTF!?!?!?!?! She’s 4!!!!) Our ped also said that the freezing would be painful for her and to try our best to treat it at home (BTW, love our ped!) So we treated at home…for weeks. We tried your regular wart treatments, the bandages with the circle of acid, the liquid you paint on, the at home freeze stuff…and she cried with all of it. Talk about breaking your mama heart.

So we decided to take a zero-pain approach and JUST SEE if it worked. And ya know flippin’ what???? It did!!! We mixed some essential oils (no, I don’t sell them…but I’m a believer!), a non-scientific mix of doTERRA essential oils:

Coconut oil (as a carrier to dilute)

And within DAYS we could see a visible improvement in the bumps.

And then my son got them. Wah Wah Waaahhhh. His were on his belly and we figured we would let it run it’s course, his body would get rid of it, no big deal. Uuuumm not so much. All of a sudden his spread like crazy, 5 bumps turned into 20 and I panicked. We went back to the regular OTC wart treatments that DIDN’T work and WEREN’T working.

Then we made a body wash concoction. Same oils, mixed with Dr.Bronner’s all purpose lavender soap. And within DAYS, noticeable improvement and NONE of my kids currently have Molluscum Contagiosum. Notice how the CDC says this ish takes 6-12 months to resolve...not for my kids!

The above picture is of my little man just 2 weeks after his daily body wash treatments. The flat, red spots are all that's left and you would never know his little tummy was infested with these nasty bumps.

Ziggety Zaggety Ziggety Zoom. (I had to!!)
